Pistol Basics: Safety & Familiarization
The Cornerstone of Responsible Firearm Ownership
Owning a firearm starts the moment you bring it home — and that’s exactly when most new owners realize they don’t fully know how to handle it. Loading, unloading, storing, readying, securing: these aren’t optional skills, they’re the baseline of safe ownership.
This class builds that baseline properly. It’s hands-on, low-pressure training focused entirely on safe gun handling — with no live ammunition in the room at all. You’ll learn the universal safety rules and practice every core manipulation until it’s comfortable, not intimidating.
Whether you’ve owned a pistol for years without formal training or you’re preparing to buy your first one, this session replaces uncertainty with confidence.

What You’ll Learn
The 4 Universal Safety Rules: A thorough, practical understanding of the rules that govern all safe firearm handling — not memorized platitudes, but how the rules actually work and why each one exists.
Loading and Unloading Magazines: Safe, correct technique for handling the magazine itself.
Loading and Unloading a Pistol: Safely charging, decocking, and clearing semi-automatics and revolvers — step by step, with repetitions until it’s smooth.
“Up and On” Safety Manipulations: Properly moving between ready and safe positions. A critical skill most owners were never taught correctly.
Hands-On Lecture and Practice: This is not a slide-deck seminar. The 2.5-hour session combines clear instruction with guided, practical hands-on manipulation, so the skills live in your hands rather than your notes.
Who This Class Is For
- New gun owners who just brought a pistol home and want to handle it with complete confidence
- Aspiring owners who want safety skills before buying — no firearm needed, we provide one for your training
- Long-time owners who never received formal safety instruction and want to close that gap
- Spouses and family members in a household with a firearm who want to be safe around it, even if they never carry one
No prior experience required. This class has no live fire and no live ammunition — it’s purely about safe handling.
How It Works
Format: Private individual or private group session, available any time of year. Also offered as a quarterly group class at a lower price than private instruction.
Duration: 2.5 hours — indoor lecture plus hands-on training
Location: Our indoor facility in Liberty Hill, Texas.
Equipment:
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Firearm | Recommended, but not required — if you don’t own one yet, we provide one for your training |
| Ammunition | None needed or permitted. No live ammunition is present in this class |
Prerequisites
None.
Safety & Familiarization is a starting point, not a step in a sequence. It requires no other course, and it serves as the prerequisite for Shooting Fundamentals if you choose to continue toward live fire.
Still Have Questions?
I don’t own a gun. Can I still take this? Yes — it’s one of the best reasons to take it. We’ll provide a firearm for your training, and you’ll learn safe handling on real equipment before you’ve spent a dollar on anything.
Why no live ammunition? Because the skills taught here — loading, unloading, readying, securing — are learned more safely and more thoroughly without it. Mastering these with dry handling means that when live fire comes later, in Shooting Fundamentals, the safety habits are already automatic.
Is this class enough to carry a firearm? This class covers safe handling and ownership. Carrying for self-defense involves legal requirements and skill development beyond this course — a good starting point for the legal side is a Texas License to Carry course from a licensed instructor. For the shooting skills, Shooting Fundamentals and the Practical Pistol Course Series continue where this class ends.
Should I take this before or after Choosing Your Ideal Firearm? Either order works — they’re independent courses. Many students take this first to learn safely on our firearms, then take Choosing with hands-on context for what suits them. Your Free Consultation will help you sequence it.
Can I take this as a group with family members? Yes. Private group sessions are available any time of year, and quarterly group classes offer a lower price per student.
