Pistol Basics: Choosing Your Ideal Firearm
Buy Once. Buy Right.
Most people buy their first handgun on someone else’s recommendation — a friend, a counter clerk, a forum thread. Then they discover it doesn’t fit their hand, their carry method, or their actual life.
This class exists to prevent that: a detailed, unbiased walkthrough of how to select a pistol and supporting equipment that genuinely suits you — before you spend money on the wrong thing.
We don’t sell firearms or equipment. That’s not a marketing line; it’s the reason our guidance is worth listening to. We have no inventory to move and no commission to earn. Our only interest is that you end up with gear that works for your circumstances and your self-defense goals.

What This Class Covers
A thorough examination of the equipment that matters — and the criteria to evaluate it yourself, long after the class ends.
Firearms: Types, calibers, and features. What actually differs between designs, and how those differences affect carry, recoil, capacity, and control.
Magazines & Spare Magazine Carriers: Capacity considerations, reliability, and how to carry spare ammunition practically.
Holsters: Carry methods — inside waistband, outside waistband, appendix, and others — along with retention, concealment, and comfort tradeoffs.
Gun Belts: Why a proper belt matters more than most people realize, and what separates a gun belt from an ordinary one.
Flashlights: Handheld and weapon-mounted options, and how lighting factors into defensive use.
Critical Accessories: The remaining pieces that support safe, effective carry — and the ones you can skip.
Rifle Selection Principles: For students planning to continue into our Tactical Rifle or Carbine training, we apply these same core selection principles to rifles and associated gear.
Who This Class Is For
- Aspiring owners: You don’t own a firearm yet and want to understand your options before buying anything.
- Existing owners: You have a pistol but want to make a better-informed decision about your next one — or finally understand why your current setup doesn’t work for you.
- Anyone tired of conflicting advice: You’ve heard ten opinions from ten people and want a framework instead of more noise.
No prior experience required. No equipment required. Come with questions.
How It Works
Format: Private individual or private group session, scheduled at a time that works for you. Available any time of year.
Duration: 1 hour
Location: Our indoor facility in Liberty Hill, Texas.
Equipment: None required. Bring your current firearm and gear if you own them and want them assessed — but this class is equally valuable if you own nothing yet.
Prerequisites
None.
Choosing Your Ideal Firearm is a stand-alone course. It does not require Safety & Familiarization or any other class, and it can be taken at any point in your training — including before you own a firearm, or years after you bought one.
Still Have Questions?
Will you try to sell me a gun? No. We don’t sell firearms or equipment. You’ll leave with criteria and understanding, not a shopping list from a vendor.
Should I take this before or after Safety & Familiarization? Either order works — they’re independent courses. Many students take this one first because it informs what they buy, then take Safety & Familiarization once they own something. Others take safety first using our firearms, then shop with better context. Your Free Consultation will help you decide.
Do I need to bring anything? No. If you already own a firearm, holster, or belt and want them evaluated, bring them. Otherwise come empty-handed.
Do you cover rifles? Yes — briefly, as an extension of the same selection principles. If you’re planning to pursue our Tactical Rifle or Carbine training, tell us during your consultation and we’ll make sure that portion gets the attention you need.
Is this just for beginners? No. Experienced owners frequently take this class and discover their existing setup was chosen for the wrong reasons.
