Carbine Phase 1: Carbine Fundamentals
Precision Starts Here
Phase 1 is where serious defensive carbine training begins. This isn’t your typical safe-handling or range-day class. You’ll develop the core handling skills, accuracy principles, and safety habits that form the bedrock of all effective armed self-defense with a rifle. Through structured dry-fire and live-fire sessions, these vital skills become second nature before you move into more complex scenarios in Phases 2, 3, and 4.
Whether you’re brand new to carbines, have grown up around them, or haven’t shot in years — this phase solidifies the fundamentals you need to progress with confidence.

Why Shorter, Frequent Sessions Work Better
Scheduled once per week for six weeks — 10 hours total.
| Session | Format | Duration | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Indoor Dry Fire | 1.5 hours | Safety & Handling |
| Day 2 | Indoor Dry Fire | 1.5 hours | Skill Building |
| Day 3 | Live Fire Range | 2.0 hours | Practical Application |
| Day 4 | Indoor Dry Fire | 1.5 hours | Skill Building |
| Day 5 | Indoor Dry Fire | 1.5 hours | Skill Building |
| Day 6 | Live Fire Range | 2.0 hours | Practical Application |
Why six sessions instead of one weekend? Repetition spaced over time builds lasting muscle memory. You practice, rest, return, and build on what you learned. This approach produces shooters who can actually perform when it matters — not just during a single intensive block. [Learn More About Our Scheduling Philosophy]
What You’ll Build
Every skill we teach traces back to a documented origin with a measurable outcome. Nothing is filler.
- Safety & Handling: Basic safety rules, loading/unloading, press checks, and safe firearm manipulation in every context.
- Accuracy Fundamentals: Sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control — the triad that determines every hit.
- Core Manipulation: Low-ready position, carbine presentation, magazine changes, and basic malfunction clearance.
- Carry Postures: Standing offhand, port carry / standard ready, low ready / CQ low ready.
- Tactical Sling Use: American sling carry, African sling carry, tactical sling carry — practicing up and on with your sling.
- Shooting from Ready Positions: Up & on from port carry and low ready positions, firing sequences under 10 yards.
- Live-Fire Proficiency: Engagement at 5, 10, and 25 yards, building accuracy that holds up under repetition.
By the end of Phase 1, you’ll have built a robust, reliable foundation for carbine self-defense.

Don’t have equipment yet? Register for your Free Consultation first. We’ll guide you through selecting a carbine, pistol, and gear that fits your hand, lifestyle, and budget — so you make informed decisions instead of guessing.
Note on Carry Setup: A sturdy belt or carry rig is required for this course — you’ll need a secure way to carry your pistol and spare magazines. If you already have equipment, bring it to your Free Consultation for evaluation. If you’re still building your setup, we’ll walk through the options together and help you choose what works for you.
Prerequisites
- Pre-class Free Consultation: Mandatory for all Carbine students. Placement, equipment review, and waiver discussion happen here.
- Rifle Zeroing Fundamentals: Our shared Phase 0 rifle class, where you’ll learn to zero your rifle yourself — and build fundamental rifle skills along the way. Experienced rifle shooters may qualify for an instructor-approved waiver during the consultation.
- Practical Pistol Phase 1: Required for every Carbine student — no exceptions — because Carbine training integrates pistol handling. New to pistols entirely? We’ll start you in Pistol Basics and map out the full path at your consultation.
Everyone begins at Carbine Phase 1. There are no exceptions and no skipping ahead, regardless of prior training or background. Experienced shooters may waive Rifle Zeroing Fundamentals or bypass Pistol Basics with instructor approval — but Practical Pistol Phase 1 and Carbine Phase 1 itself are required for every student entering the Carbine Course Series.
During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your current skill level and confirm your equipment meets safety standards for range training.
Still Have Questions?
I’ve never touched a carbine before. Can I still take this? Not directly — Phase 1 assumes you’ve completed Rifle Zeroing Fundamentals and Practical Pistol Phase 1, or can demonstrate equivalent rifle fundamentals during your Free Consultation (Pistol Phase 1 cannot be waived). If you’re starting from zero on either platform, your consultation maps the fastest legitimate path — usually Rifle Zeroing Fundamentals and the pistol series in alternating phases.
What if my equipment isn’t ready? Tell us during your Free Consultation. We’ll review your current gear and advise you on what will work best for your training path.
Is this enough to feel protected? Phase 1 gives you the foundation. Full defensive capability develops through Phases 2–4. We’ll discuss your goals during your consultation and map out a realistic path forward.
Where do we train? Indoor dry-fire sessions and live-fire range sessions are conducted at our facility in Liberty Hill, Texas.
