Pistol Basics: Shooting Fundamentals
Where Safe Handling Becomes Shooting Skill
Safety & Familiarization taught you to handle a pistol with confidence. This is where that confidence gets put to work on the range — your first structured live-fire instruction, built to develop accurate, repeatable marksmanship from the very first shots.
This is not “show up and blast paper.” Under expert supervision, you’ll learn the specific mechanics that separate shooters who hit consistently from shooters who hope. Every fundamental is taught step by step, corrected in real time, and drilled until it’s yours.
And if your goal is serious defensive training, this class matters twice: it’s the crucial step before entering Phase 1 of the Practical Pistol Course Series.

What You’ll Learn
Under expert, supervised instruction, you’ll develop the critical mechanics of effective handgun shooting:
Proper Grip: A stable, consistent hold — the foundation of recoil management and accuracy.
Stance: A balanced shooting platform that keeps you steady shot after shot.
Sight Alignment: Achieving a clear, precise sight picture, every time.
Trigger Control: A smooth, consistent press — and how to stop anticipating the shot, the single most common accuracy killer.
Follow-Through: Maintaining focus and control after the shot for optimal results.
Efficient Shooting Habits: Smooth, repeatable actions that produce consistent performance — not just a lucky good group.
Your instructor watches for the classic errors — flinching, jerking, squeezing with the whole hand — and corrects them before they become permanent. Habits built wrong are expensive to unlearn. Built right, from the first session, they last.

Prerequisites
Completion of Pistol Basics: Safety & Familiarization.
There are no exceptions to this requirement. Live-fire instruction assumes you already handle a pistol safely and confidently — loading, unloading, and the “Up and On” manipulations — so that class time here is spent on shooting, not on re-teaching safety basics.
If you’ve never taken Safety & Familiarization, that’s your starting point. It’s offered privately any time of year and quarterly as a group class.
Your Path From Here
Shooting Fundamentals is the final step of Pistol Basics — and the doorway to serious training:
Complete Shooting Fundamentals → Enter Phase 1 of the Practical Pistol Course Series → progress through the four phases → and beyond into the Stay Sharp program.
If your goal is defending yourself and the people you love, this class is where that path leaves the ground.
Still Have Questions?
I’ve shot before. Do I still need this class? Unless you’ve had formal instruction in grip, stance, sight alignment, and trigger control, yes — most self-taught shooters have compensating habits they can’t see. We diagnose and fix them here, which is far cheaper than carrying them into advanced training.
Can I go straight into the Practical Pistol Course Series? Experienced shooters may qualify for direct entry into Phase 1 with instructor approval — that assessment happens at the Free Consultation. But most shooters benefit from the fundamentals rebuild first. If you’re ready to skip it, we’ll tell you plainly.
What if I’m nervous about live fire? That’s normal, and it’s exactly what the class structure is built for. Supervised, step-by-step progression with an instructor watching every shot. By the end, most students’ apprehension has been replaced by competence.
Can I take this as a group? Yes — private group sessions any time of year, or the quarterly group class at a lower rate.
